Know When Enough is Enough With Voice Broadcasting?
Welcome to this week’s Marketing Minute Tip. As powerful as Voice Broadcasting CAN be, unfortunately it is often abused and overused.
You’ve probably even been on the receiving end of this experience yourself where you’re sitting down at the dinner table, the phone rings, you pick it up, and it’s a Voice Broadcast message from someone you’ve never heard of before or the message tells you to press 1 to connect to a live operator that’s going to pitch you.
One mistake you never want to make is using Voice Broadcasting in this manner!
Voice broadcasting is a client relationship building tool not a lead generation device. That means calling them up to wish them a Happy Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving or Birthday. Even Anniversaries are all good opportunities for this technology and appropriate times to use it and send your feel-good message. You can even offer your customer or prospect a gift if they drop by your store or a special discount. The truth is usually less than 1% of your broadcast list will take you up on your offer, whatever it is, but they’ll sure remember you offered them something. Why? Because NO ONE else does!
And this brings up another important point. You can’t always be selling when you send these messages out. It’s no different than the neighbour who only comes over when she wants to borrow something. On the other hand, your mood sure changes when you open the door to see her standing there with the freshly baked apple pie she just made for you.
Of course there are some situations where it is totally appropriate to try to get the prospect to buy. For example, if you’re having a sale, Voice Broadcasting always bumps response. Another good way to use Voice Broadcasting is for collecting e-mail addresses from your clients.
Think about this situation. You come home after work, and check your phone messages. One of them happens to be from your dentist saying, “Hi it’s Dr. Richard from Bright Smiles Dentistry. Sorry I missed you. I just wanted to let you know that I want to thank all my loyal patients, so I’m having a customer appreciation draw this Friday and I’ll be giving away a romantic weekend get-away for 2 at the Irwin Loge. To enter simply send us an email to Richard@BrightSmilesDentistry.com or call our romantic weekend getaway line @ 1-800-romance and leave your name and phone number. Thanks again and good luck. Bye.”
If you’ve got 500 clients and the weekend getaway costs $500 you’ve just invested a little over $1.00 per client including the voice broadcasting cost and you look like a hero.
You can do exactly the same type of thing if you’ve just re-done your website or just gotten one for the first time. Send a Voice Broadcast to your clients to let them know you’re really excited about your new website and to celebrate they can go to it for a special customer appreciation prize. All they have to do is enter their e-mail address in the appropriate spot.
You can also tie in a promotion to your local charity. Send prospects a message letting them know that for every person who sends an e-mail to you with the subject line “charity,” you’ll donate $1.00 for every e-mail you get and you’ll donate it on behalf of all of them. By the way this is a great publicity technique because you can turn it into a challenge with another business in your community and the local media will cover it.
